Yay! California Is Smarter Than Everywhere Else!

As of this morning, gay people can get married in the state of California. I'll spare you the philosophizing and just sum it up with one word: duh. Dear Rest Of The Country, Except (I think) Massachusets and like Vermont or something? Catch the fuck up. Dear Minnesota: you especially, though good luck getting those yokels in, like, Motley, MN where "EMBRYOS ARE PEOPLE TOO" billboards outnumber actual human beings, to see sense.

That's nothing. I've been married to a man for years now. Famous people can do things like that. I'm also married to a spotted owl, and emu, and the skeleton of Jackie Gleason. Being awesome is awesome. You should try it sometime.

I hope CA is just the gateway to the deluge. Of course, you'd THINK with all the gay voters in MN that maybe we might be more likely to have it happen here.

John Phillip Law died today. This law is useless to me.

I think this is why Zahn propositioned me at my house this morning, on the lawn and dripping in Tabasco sauce.

Bravo California! I drive through Motley, MN a lot, but I never stop.

Bust out those rosaries, good Christian people of America - gay people can now get lower car insurance rates. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Damn. Who'll gentrify the neighborhoods here once all the fags move to California?

Not you, certainly.

Dear Jonny:

Uggg...I can't stand reading your blog anymore. I give up. I kept tying to believe that it was as hip or clever as you seemed to think it was.

Nope.

Sincerely,
One less yokel

P.S. By the way dumbass, just like in every state, young people EVERYWHERE are pretty much cool with the gay thing. Give us 30 years and gay marriage is going to become something we all take for granted. Now, I'm on my way to blogs that are much funnier. I'm looking for more than some dude that feels sorry for himself, solves it by following his much more successful partner to California and than dogging on Minnesota.

BARF!

Thank you very much, and please don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. I'm perfectly happy to shed any reader who'd post an insulting comment rather than just bugger off quietly.

By the way, I don't think I'm hip or clever at all, nor do I feel particularly sorry for myself, but thanks for the two-buck psychoanalysis and the low-blow about the ex, that's lovely (and yet another reason I'm happy to shed you as a reader). And thank you also for confirming the stereotype of Minnesotans as the most defensive group of folks in the history of ever. I swear to god, you can't look at the state funny without residents getting up in arms. I like it just fine -- lived there for 35 years, thanks -- but there's a lot about it that pisses me off, and that's one pretty huge thing, that air of smug self-importance.

And last I looked -- which was fairly recently -- apart from the TC Metro and a few other enclaves, rural Minnesota -- god bless it, its just lovely -- was firmly red state. Good to know the youth will save us.

Hope you enjoy the funnier blogs. And some Pepto will clear up that vomiting problem.

And by the by, if Minnesota is so damn enlightened, tell me why it keeps trying to pass amendments that ban gay marriage?

Zahn? Is that you? Just because you made some embarassing comments doesn't mean you have to hide behind being anonymous. Wear your insults proud.

So, does the fact that I followed MY more successful partner to California make me some kind of failed loser? Boo...boo to love and devotion!

Go Zahn!

And not to dis the reds, btw. Mostly just the anti-gay ones. Sadly, they're still out there.

I'm absolutely certain that the anonymous mean spirited asshole commenting here is NOT Zahn. Zahn isn't smart enough to be mean. He usually is just bitterly arrogant. Just wanted you to know what I thought.

Jon Hunt said...

Nah, Zahn would never stoop to posting anonymously!!

Let me just say....if you're you're going to blog...Do it LOUD and PROUD. minnesota does tend to be pretty backwards. But we don't really know it because we never get out of this place.Jonny and Ms. Trixi-good for you! Have fun in California and don't let the freaks get you down. I think you're cool.

and I, of course, meant "you're" one time. But "you're you're" works! right?

Interestingly enough, social and legal discourse concerning same-sex marriage in this country starts with Minnesota, in 1970. Two University of Minnesota gay student activists applied for a marriage license in Hennepin County, and as it is a hot-button issue now, it certainly was in the early '70's, and their application was refused. Made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case. Not surprisingly, the Minnesota Supreme Court eventually ruled the marriage license as unconstitutional, and a ban has been on the books in Minnesota since then. There has been newer legislation regarding banning same-sex marriage, but it is pointless overkill because of the 1971 ruling.

Even after the Minnesota Supreme Court ruling, Blue Earth County issued a marriage license to the couple, and they were married by a minister in Minneapolis, in 1971.

Yes, there is a same-sex marriage ban in Minnesota, but it speaks to the gay community here (and the nice Blue Earth County people) for giving it a try decades before anywhere else, even European countries, who have since gone on to collectively trump the United States on this issue, anyway. And Minnesota isn't without legal protections for the GLBT community; indeed, activism is one of the many reasons Minneapolis has such an internationally-recognized gay community. Self-important as it well may be in your eyes, I cannot be anything but proud.

As an anonymous poster, I thank you for allowing my take here. I don't wish to be a hypocrite or trivialize the topic by engaging in some ornery piss-match amongst people living in two different states. I only just wanted to direct you to some Minnesota history regarding same-sex marriage that I find personally ground-breaking.

I appreciate you telling me that, I did not know that.
