Food Review: McDonald's Southern-Style Chicken Sammich

Hatesexy: eating weird-ass food so you don't have to.

The Southern-Style Chicken Sandwich is the first time in a looooong time I was completely swayed by awesome advertising photography to devour something I normally wouldn't. The billboards and bus-kings are all over LA. I wish I could find an example, but this photo from PR Web is pretty close:

MMMM. Doesn't that look good? That crisp, fluffy bun...that delectable and juicy-looking hunk of meat...those amazing, crunchy-looking pickles...man, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. For weeks now I've been telling Trix that I just had to have one, like immediately. Sensible girl that she is, she told me "Dude, there's no way those things are as good as the photographs."

Last night, though, we found ourselves starving at 10 PM after a dance recital, and so , culinary experimenters that we are, we decided it was time to give 'em a shot.

So how are they?

Well, frankly, I had no idea what "Southern-Style Chicken" was, being, y'now, from about as far North as you can possibly get. Apparently this sandwich was invented to compete with a popular Southern restaurant chain. But hell, when I think Southern Chicken, I think gravy and there's no damn gravy to be seen.

What we have? A buttered bun, two pickle slices, and some chicken. That's it.

It's tiny. Seriously. Its really small. The bun is crisp and fluffy, I suppose, and the meat is juicy. But c'mon, juicy meat at McDonalds? You just know those bastards injected a portion of Mashed, Reprocessed Chickeny-Flavored Meat Goop with 2 gallons of water to make it juicy.

No gravy. I swear, I wanted gravy.

At any rate, end result? It's fairly yummy, but its really just like having a McNugget sandwich, which, y'know, sounds like something you'd concoct if you were really high. "Oh, dude, we have those leftover McNuggets from last night, and a couple buns from the grill-out last weekend. I think there's some pickles. Oh, and margarine!! Let's throw it in the microwave and eat the shit out of that stuff. Puff puff pass, dude, puff puff pass!"

I give it a firm 6 out of 10. Its on the good side of good, but it sure ain't nothin' to write home about.

PS-the dance recital was for my 13 year old niece. She was great. The wee kids were my fav. And jonny and I had endless fun trying to figure out which of the older girls were gonna end up working the pole in 5 years time. They were awesome!

The breakfast version is alright, but no pickles. The pickles on the fried chicken is sort of the only part that wins.

Uh, I've had the breakfast version several times. I'm a sucker for advertising too. I like it, but it does need gravy.

I haven't had it, but I think *Southern Style*, means FRIED.

I totally concur. A solid 6 of 10, which is a D, which is passing at the undergrad level only. In comparison, the KFC Snacker is like heaven.

I had one on my hour-long commute home one day last week, and thought I'd be getting something that was, I dunno, more flavorful. If "Southern Style" simply means fried, then the dollar-menu classic McChicken ought to be it. And because that sucker has salt, pepper, and MSG all over it, it's far superior in flavor.

I guess maybe it's more a pressure-cooker kind of thing, because while the Southern is breaded, it's not crispy. At least mine wasn't. It was the consistency of a microwaved Stouffer's chicken breast.

I think they're trying to go after Chik-Fil-A. I dunno...

WROOOOOONG. FAIL. This is the best chicken sandwich of all time! I had one at the Robbinsdale McD's after E&H's wedding and I nearly fainted from pleasure!

It tasted like a bun!

Febrifuge is right. They're totally ripping off Chik-Fil-A.

The bun was fluffy, sure... and it had kind of a glaze of buttery-topping-substance... but yeah, I've had real Chik-Fil-A, and this sandwich, senator, is no Chik-Fil-A.

OK, I'm agreeing with DC on this one. That sandwich is really good. The breading is tasty without being that rock hard crunchy stuff, the bun is yummy, and the pickles add. It's about time we got something even near a Chik-Fil-A outside of the South. It doesn't feel completely sinful to eat either. It's one of the more decent things you can get at a drive through, when you don't have the strength or the time for a sit down meal. And no gloppy mayo cascading down your chin and falling into your lap. Try a second, it'll grow on ya!
